Congratulations to Didi Say for presenting his speech, on the topic of 'Fracking' in the first semi-final of the Rotary Four Way Test Speech Competition.
Cooking Demonstration Year 12 Hospitality students got to practice their Master Chef skills on Friday 23rd February when Hospitality Group Training brought in a chef to demonstrate to the class. Chef Ashleigh prepared poached salmon with rhubarb, peas and crème Fraiche. Students then prepared and plated their own meals. The demonstration gave students the opportunity to ask lots of questions and find out what it is like to work in the hospitality industry. Non-alcoholic beverages Year 12 students are currently completing the unit ‘Prepare and Serve Non-Alcoholic Beverages.’ An important part of the unit involves students preparing and selling drinks to staff. This term they have already sold iced chocolates, iced coffees and frappes to staff on Friday afternoons, with very good feedback from their customers. In the coming weeks, they will be preparing and selling fruit smoothies.
In Week 3, Mr Charles took the Year 12 Integrated Science class on an excursion around local wetlands. They visited Bells Rapids, Bennett Brook, Sandy Beach Reserve in Bassendean and Lake Gwelup to collect water samples. They will conduct various tests on the samples to see how much phosphate, nitrate and dissolved oxygen there is at each source. This will provide information on the human impact on each area, as well as information about the ecosystem at each location for their first research assessment. Year 12 ATAR Psychology students got to be brain surgeons when they conducted brain dissections (on sheep's brains - that is). We have been studying the brain this month and this was an awesome opportunity for students to explore the anatomy of a sheep's brain and make connections to the functional significance of the structures they found.
Congratulations to Bethany Robinson and Ayouk Mading who performed in the 2018 Fringe Festival show, “Yourseven” directed by James Berlyn held at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. The Year 12 students were included in the performance as they have been attending classes at the WA Youth Theatre Company (WAYTCO). They were both scouted and awarded full scholarships after completing workshops held at Dianella Secondary College by WAYTCO in 2017. In these classes, they have been learning many different skills such as puppetry. “Yourseven” is based on Jaques' famous speech from "As You Like It", and prompts the audience to consider their life journey through the frame of Shakespeare's seven ages of man. The whole performance is a “walk through experience” for the audience who come face to face with the seven ages of man represented by the actor though strictly non – verbal performing. “This performance really helped develop my non –verbal skills when performing,” said Ayouk Mading , who was a chorus member in the show. Overall, both students were very grateful for the experience. Not only did they find it beneficial for their Year 12 Drama studies, but recognised it was an excellent life experience. “The best part about performing for the WA Youth Theatre Company is meeting and networking with such amazing performers from all around WA,” said Bethany Robinson, who also was a chorus member in the performance. On Valentine's Day the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Psychology classes were creative, and very corny, when they made brain themed Valentine cards - who knew that revision could be such fun?
