The following evening, more than 600 people filed into the Melbourne Convention Centre for a Gala Celebration Dinner hosted by the AIIA. During a night of glitz and glamour similar to the Oscars, our girls networked with Australia's best innovators like true professionals. There were three Student Categories announced at the beginning of the evening with each category giving a merit award and a winner. There is a 5% gap between the merit award and the winner's score or no merit will be announced. At a National event where The Wiggles were awarded a prize for new innovation that teaches children to read, Buddi went on to win the Merit Award in the Senior Student Category and have qualified to pitch their concept at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards in Vietnam early October! Congratulations to our girls on such a fantastic achievement!! The culmination of Book Week was the annual Costume Parade in the Library. To reinforce the theme “Reading is my Special Power” we were lucky enough to have members of the 501st Legion Desert Scorpion Garrison join us as special guests and judges, dressed in costumes from the Star Wars franchise.
These Imperial guards seemed to have a mind of their own as, on their way to the Library, the Storm Troopers and Tie Fighter Pilots deviated from the path and invaded some of the classrooms, catching students by surprise! The walkway to the library was heavily decorated with varying flags and super hero paraphernalia, the most impressive item being a hand-made seven-foot-tall talking Groot!! As students filed into the Library for the annual Book Week Costume Parade during Lunch 2, excited chatter filled the room as they spotted our special guests. Students and staff had the opportunity to pose for photos before the intergalactic judges chose the winners of the best costume in each year group. To fit with the theme of 2019 Book Week, "Reading is my superpower", our reading superheroes chose their favourite books from the comprehensive range in our school library!
