Congratulations to Year 12 student Zahra Al Hilaly who was selected to attend the 2017 Australian Schools’ Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Canberra.
Zahra was one of fifteen students from Western Australia selected to attend the five day tour of our nation’s capital. The convention, which revolves around students openly discussing the Australian Constitution, focused on Indigenous rights and recognition in this country. Students participated in an in-depth debate and role-played a referendum to expand their knowledge on how laws are passed in the High Court of Australia. On the trip, Zahra was asked to speak about her views in relation to Indigenous Rights when meeting the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion. Other highlights of her tour included a visit to the Australian War Memorial, the High Court and many of the other museums in of Canberra. She was also lucky enough to meet Lady Cosgrove, wife of Governor- General of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove. Zahra nominated for this event following participation in the WA Schools’ Constitutional Convention in 2016. She was required to submit a written application, along with a recommendation from a staff member. Well done, Zahra, on this huge achievement. |
