Last week the Dianella Education Precinct celebrated Harmony Day. Harmony Day is a day to celebrate the inclusiveness we have in Australia. It is also a chance for everyone to learn something new about different cultures. The day commenced with Dianella Primary College students participating in a range of activities from Soccer clinics, to dance classes and Aboriginal art classes. At recess, local community agencies ran Harmony Day activities such as colouring in, photography, a guess the flag competitions, face painting and hair braiding. Students were also able to pin the countries they are from on a map that will be displayed at Dianella Secondary College. The Dianella Secondary College Dance Club and Dianella A Cappella also performed. It was also good to have all students from the Dianella Education Precinct having morning tea together as one. After recess, Dianella Secondary College ran a whole precinct assembly to recognise Harmony Day. We were lucky enough to have Adullahi Alim, a WA finalist for 2017 Young Australian of the Year speak. Alim talked about him homeland Somalia and the opportunities he has had since migrating to Australia. Dianella Secondary College students, Negina Aziz and Claude Ishmwali, spoke about what Harmony Day means to them and how we are lucky enough to be a part of such an inclusive school community. Students from the Year 12 Dance course performed a dance they created called “African Fusion” which the audience loved. To finish the assembly, student representatives from different nationalities carried flag in a flag procession to showcase the diversity of cultures within our school community. Many students were also dressed in their traditional clothes for the day. In the afternoon, Dianella Secondary College students participated in cultural dance activities. AFL and basketball clinics and a team-building workshop were run by multiple agencies from the local community. Students also participated in a African drumming workshop which sounded amazing, Overall, everyone within the Dianella Education Precinct had a great day celebrating our diverse and inclusive community, whilst learning about different cultures.
