Dianella Secondary College Lower School students studied public speaking in their English classes. To inspire many nervous students, Miss Blake invited the 2012 Super Light Weight Western Australian State Champion, Jungle George, to speak. As many Dianella Secondary College students had expressed and interest the sport of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), she decided this would be the perfect reward for their hard work throughout 2017. Many students doubted that she could convince the Western Australian icon to attend, but to their surprise she pulled it off! Jungle George spoke about the importance of working hard at school to achieve goals, whilst encouraging students to be confident and courageous when performing their upcoming public speaking tasks. He also focused on the necessity of being respectful to everyone within the school community to promote the Dianella Secondary College anti-bullying program “Speak Up” and the National White Ribbon Campaign, which the school is participating in. Throughout the sessions students asked questions, shared honest thoughts, opinions and acknowledged the importance of helping each other. The sessions helped many students feel empowered and confident, especially when they were able to learn some self-defence skills, which was the most frequent question asked to Jungle George of the day.
